The bullring "La Malagueta" was inaugurated on 11th June 1876 with a bullfight in which the mythical bullfighter Rafael Molina "Lagartijo", Antonio Carmona y Luque, El Gordito, and Manuel Domínguez, Desperdicios, fought.

The work of Joaquín Rucoba, who also designed the Atarazanas Market, it is neo-Mudejar in style. It is in the shape of a hexadecagon, as can be seen from the Gibralfaro viewpoint, which offers beautiful views of the bullring. The bullring measures 52 metres in diameter and has 4 corrals, 10 chiqueros, stables and an infirmary, among other facilities.

In 1939, during the last months of the Civil War, the saturation of the concentration camp for prisoners in Malaga, located in the factory and barracks of La Aurora, led the military rebels to use the bullring for this purpose; in 1943 it once again housed detainees, this time foreign refugees fleeing from France during the Second World War.

In 1976 it was declared a Historic-Artistic Site, coinciding with the centenary of its inauguration, and in 1981 it was declared an Asset of Cultural Interest.

The bullring underwent a restoration that began in 2017 and was delayed for two years, opening to the public in 2019, coinciding with the 145th anniversary of the beginning of the construction of the bullring. This restoration stands out for recovering the original brick façade and its exterior decorative elements. In addition, this restoration included the reorganisation of the square's space to house new exhibition spaces and congress halls that will turn La Malagueta into a cultural centre for year-round use. At present it also houses the Antonio Ordóñez Bullfighting Museum and is considered a first class bullring.

In the month of August it hosts its great annual event, the Bullfighting Fair, in which you can access a wide programme of bullfights with great figures of bullfighting.
